Oral healthcare – a global issue

Contrary to popular belief, oral healthcare is an issue that affects both young and old people alike. While many of us appreciate the importance of teaching our children a thorough oral hygiene routine, many adults still neglect their own teeth and gums. The fact is, it is never too late to start a healthy oral care routine.

So why is oral health so important? The World Health Organisation has developed a program dedicated to improving oral health in the 21st century – the WHO Global Oral Health Program (ORH) . This initiative is driven by a growing understanding of common oral healthcare issues and their link to major illnesses.

Just how serious is the issue of oral health in the U.S.?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention http://www.cdc.gov/, tooth decay affects more than 25% of U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 5 and more than 50% of children age 12 to 15. In addition, advanced gum disease affects 4 to 12 percent of adults… while one-fourth of adults aged 65 and older have lost all of their teeth.

• Oral diseases share common risk factors with the four major chronic diseases – cardiovascular disease, cancer, respiratory disease and diet.
• 60 to 90% of school children worldwide have dental cavities.
• Dental cavities are 100% preventable.
• Severe periodontal (gum) disease, which may result in tooth loss, is found in 5 to 20% of middle-aged adults; the rate varies across geographical regions.
• The incidence of oral cancer ranges from one to 10 cases per 100,000 population in most countries.
• Traditional curative dental care is a significant economic burden for many high-income countries, where 5 to 10% of public health expenditure relates to oral health
